Cohort-Based Mentorship

Students grow together — guided collectively by experienced macro social work professionals.

Stronger Together. Mentored as a Cohort.

Cohort-Based Mentorship

Youth In Macro’s mentorship model is intentionally cohort-based. Rather than individual one-on-one pairings, fellows are mentored collectively alongside their peers — guided by macro social work professionals across policy, advocacy, technology, and organizational leadership.

This model creates a richer learning environment where students benefit not only from professional guidance but from the collective knowledge, lived experience, and support of their fellow cohort members.

Why cohort-based? We believe community is a core component of professional development. When students learn alongside their peers, they build the collaborative relationships that sustain long careers in systems-level work.

How It Works

1

Fellows Are Selected as a Cohort

Each program cycle begins with a cohort of fellows selected through our application process — bringing together students from diverse institutions and backgrounds.

2

Monthly Group Mentorship Sessions

The full cohort meets monthly with an assigned professional mentor who brings expertise in a specific area of macro social work — from federal policy to nonprofit leadership.

3

Peer Learning & Collaboration

Between sessions, cohort members work together on research, share resources, and support each other’s professional development throughout the program year.

4

Network Access

Fellows gain access to the broader YIM professional network — connecting with mentors, alumni, and partners across policy, research, and advocacy sectors.
